Numbers indicate the number of electoral votes allotted to each state. Adams had narrowly defeated Jefferson in the 1796 elect. Adams received 65 votes and Pinckney received 64.

John Jay who had not even run received one electoral vote.

There were new political leaders emerging yet the generation of the Revolutionary War still maintained most of the influence. The election went to the House of Representatives which had to make a final choice voting by states. Not surprisingly Jefferson abandoned Burr as a running mate in 1804. It was held from October 31 to December 3 1800.
